Boaters using the Bel Air Beach boat ramp on the south side of Storm Lake should pay special attention to their props when loading their boat on the trailer.  A large scour hole has developed at the end of the ramp from boaters who use the motor to push their way onto the trailer, instead of using the trailer wench to load the boat.

The hole has exposed the end of the concrete ramp pad.  If the motor is not trimmed up enough, the prop can break when it makes contact with the concrete while the boat is being pulled out, or the trailer can be damaged when its tires fall into the hole while backing down the ramp.

The problem with prop wash out at boat ramps is not unique to Storm Lake .  The issue can be prevented by using the wench cable to load the boat instead of gunning the boat motor.
