Rainbow trout are making their way back to Council Bluffs. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources, in conjunction with Western Historic Trails Center, plans to stock 1,500 trout Friday afternoon..

This fall and winter the center’s Sauganash Pond will be the only area stocked. The park renovation project and the lowering of the water level at West Big Lake in Big Lake Park will prevent any stocking there until next spring.

The keeper-size rainbow trout will provide some good fishing through the rest of the fall. Additional trout stockings are planned for January and March.

Iowa residents and nonresidents, regardless of age, must pay a trout fee to fish for or possess trout. Individuals 16 and older must also have a valid fishing license. Children younger than 16, fishing with a properly licensed adult (fishing license and trout fee), do not need a trout fee to fish for or possess trout, but together their daily limit is five trout.
